Swarming like...ants

I saw this ant swarm this morning while tending our goats. As fate would have it, the swarm happened on a weekend when both kids were helping me, so we all stood in awe watching the drones fly off. Four hours later, there wasn't a sign of an ant.

That's the Willow's mud boot behind the stump (can't see her in this photo) so you get an idea how large the swarm was.

Looks like something out of a scary movie!! lol But cool to see!! I have family in Louisiana and would go visit when I was a kid. The Fire ants always interested me.. Rather dangerous to stir those things up though..

We have seen fire ants here!! Awful! I think it was cold enough last winter to knock them back. The first thing I did was look to see if they were fire ants and they weren't...there were little tiny red ants and then larger black winged ones. I am guessing they were red ants and the larger drones were black (but still "red ants")...they weren't carpenter ants, either...so many types of ants I can't even try to identify them properly other than eliminate what they weren't! LOL. Tree
